Basic Hair Structure
Men’s hair is composed of structural and strong protein that is called keratin. This is the protein that is responsible for the existence of your nails and the outer layer of your skin.
Each fibre of hair consists of exactly three layers:
1. First there’s the innermost layer (aka medulla) which is only present in large and thick hairs.
2. The second , middle layer , is known as the cortex and provides strength , color and texture of your hair.
3. The third , outermost layer, is known as the cuticle. It is thin and colorless and serves as a shield of the cortex.
Structure of the hair root
The hair root is placed below the surface of the skin and is enclosed within a hair follicle. The dermal papilla is situated at the base of the follicle and is fed by the bloodstream which carries nourishment to produce new hair. The dermal papilla is one of the most important structures when it comes to hair growth because it contains the most important receptors – those for male hormones and androgens. Androgens regulate hair growth and in scalp hair Androgens may cause the hair follicle to get progressively smaller and the hairs to become finer in individuals who are genetically predisposed to this type of hair loss.
What is typical for hair follicles is that they grow in repeated cycles. If we take a deeper look at those cycles , each of them can be broken down into three main phases:
1. First phase – Growth Phase – Anagen
2. Second phase – Transitional phase – Catagen
3. Third phase – Resting phase – Telogen
There is one interesting fact about those phases - each hair passes through them independent of the neighboring hairs.
Anagen Phase - Growth Phase
Scientists have calculated that approximately 85% of all hairs are in the growing phase all the time. This so called Anagen phase or growth phase can vary from 2 to 6 years. The average growth of hair is 10 cm per year and it’s unlikely that any hair will grow more than one meter long.
Catagen Phase - Transitional phase
When the Anagen phase comes to an end the hairs enters the Catagen phase which is usually lasting about one or two weeks. While the Catagen phase is in progress the hair follicle shrinks to about 1/6 of its normal length and its lower part is destroyed. Then the dermal papilla breaks away to rest below.
Telogen Phase - Resting phase
The Telogen phase (aka resting phase) follows the Catagen phase and usually lasts about 5 to 6 weeks. During this time the hair isn’t growing but it stays attached to the follicle. The dermal papilla stays in a resting phase below. Scientists believe that between 10 and 15 % of all hairs are in the resting phase at one time.
The cycle is starting all over when at the end of the Telogen phase the hair follicle re-enters the Anagen phase and the dermal papilla join with the base of the follicle. When this happens new hair begins to form and if the old hair hasn’t already been shed the new hair pushes it out and the growth cycle starts from the beginning.

When we talk about reasons for hair loss it is almost impossible to find two doctors or scientists that seem to agree on one single reason. I didn’t want to pont your attention at one single hair loss reason so I decided to list some of the most common baldness triggers. As far as this site is not connected with any company’s opinion I want to point out that information posted below is absolutely neutral.
Medicine has given us a list of the general reasons for hair loss and you can see it in descending order in the upcoming lines:
1. Heredity factors – probably the most common reasons
2. Ageing – something actually pretty normal
3. Hormonal Imbalance – might be treated with drugs
4. Illness and infectious diseases – this is an object of dermatology
5. Nervous disorders – nowadays the life is pretty intense so…
6. Toxic substances – food , drinks , polluted air – should it be like this?
7. Injury and impairment – talks for itself
8. Severe radiation – not really common but really dangerous
Each of these problems can be a contributory or main factor for hair loss, if there is a combination of two or more then the chances of hair loss are increased considerably.
Hair Loss Explanation - #1
Male pattern baldness aka natural hair loss in men is occurring due to male hormones (Androgens). Testosterone is said to be the most relevant to hair loss. If a man has inherited necessary genes for hair loss, small quantities of testosterone is formed by some of the hair’s roots and this specific hormone is called Dihydrotestosterone. It is Dihydrotestosterone that is directly responsible for hair loss.
When anyone washes their hair there are always a few hairs that are left in the basin afterwards. I must underline that this does not necessarily mean that this particular person’s hair is thinning or that he is suffering hair loss. All this is a natural process that allows the hair’s roots to replace their old hairs with new stronger ones. If you take close look at your fallen hair you will notice a small white bobble at the end of each filament. This is NOT the root and is formed from degenerated cells from within the root and is called a club. If it is possible for someone to pull out hair together with the hair root then this person’s scalp will bleed.
If Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) has been produced it will be present in the sebum (grease which is secreted from the sebum glands by everyone) on the surface of the scalp. In that case, when a hair is shed and the root is empty, DHT will enter the follicle and react with the root chemically. This will result in the miniaturizing of the hair root which automatically leads to thinner new hair. When this process is repeated for several times you will end up with a hair so thin (or missing) in a specific area hence baldness occurs.
It is easy to determine if a person’s hair is thinning on the front hair line by feeling the thickness and comparing it to the one of the hair in the back of the head.

A leading American clinic claims that 99% of all hair loss in men and women is caused by one single thing – excessive oil. This particular oil is called sebum and clogs the pores of the scalp. This stifles follicle growth and after some time the hair root is asphyxiated , making it impossible for new hair to grow.
The follicles on top of a men’s heads grow straight up so when oil is produced from the oil cells and released from the scalp it has nowhere to go. On women’s heads, it can slip down the hair and eventually shaft towards the end but on men’s oil can only slide back to where it came from – the scalp.
If the head is not washed regularly oil becomes wax and clogs the pored. When this happens if a hair is shed , its successor can’t come out. The wax is stronger and the hair is weakening until it goes to sleep under the scalp. If there are a few hairs that manage to push through that layer of wax they are so puny that are ready to fall out as soon as they break free.

This explanation lies on the statement that baldness doesn’t occur through heredity or as a result of the effects of testosterone on hair follicles. Rather it is caused because of the poor flow of blood headed to the scalp, resulting in insufficient nutrients and poor drainage of toxic products through the lymphatic systems.

This theory is about the co-operation of three main factors , especially in men , that bring a typical hair deficiency in the area of the temples , a general thinning or a bald crown mid head/forehead.

Male pattern baldness can be transmitted with a dominant tendency and the worst part is that female members of a family are transmitters as well.
Because of the fact that hair loss occurs between the 20th and 50th years of age there is no danger for male pattern baldness in the puberty.
There are many other factors such as mechanical irritation (washing, wearing a helmet or hat, combing of hair, dirt exposure), stress, lack of vital vitamins or minerals can’t be blamed as a cause but as a trigger for hair loss.

As we all see there are numerous explanations giver for the cause of hair loss. Every single clinic, consultant, health institution and even doctor will give a different explanation for the cause of male baldness.
I personally believe that the first explanation is the most probable cause of male pattern baldness. Male hormone testosterone appears to be the main problem , therefore is heavily linked to heredity
